Volkswagen History

Volkswagen Group, a major German automobile manufacturer, was founded in 1937 and headquartered in Wolfsburg Germany. The German term Volk translates to “people”, thus Volkswagen translates to “people’s car”. By 1949 more than half of the passenger cars produced in the country were Volkswagens.

Popular models include Golf, Jetta, Passat, Atlas, and Tiguan. The most iconic known Volkswagen, the Beetle, was officially called the Volkswagen Type 1, is the longest-running and most-manufactured car of a single platform ever made.

Volkswagen production expanded rapidly in the 1950s. The company introduced the Transporter van in 1950. Sales abroad were generally strong in most countries of export, but, because of the car’s small size and unusual rounded appearance, sales in the United States were initially slow-moving. Volkswagen of America was established in 1955 and the American advertising agency Doyle Dane Bernbach was hired to represent the brand in 1959. The very successful ad campaign helped to popularize the “Beetle”, it promoted the size and unconventional design.

Competition from small cars with more-modern designs resulted in Volkswagen began phasing out its rear-engine cars in the 1970s, replacing them with front-engine front-wheel-drive designs. Volkswagen entered the supermini market in the 70’s. What followed was the Passat in 1973 and the Golf, introduced in the United States as the Rabbit in 1974. The Golf was an instant sales success, effectively replacing the Beetle in the company’s lineup and ultimately becoming Volkswagen’s best-selling model worldwide.

In the 1980s, Volkswagen’s sales in the United States decreased dramatically despite the success of models like the Golf elsewhere. The introduction of the second-generation Golf, GTI and Jetta models helped Volkswagen briefly. Plus with the announcement Motor Trend named the GTI its Car of the Year for 1985, and Volkswagen rose in the J.D. Power buyer satisfaction ratings to eighth place in 1985, up from 22nd a year earlier.

In 1991, Volkswagen launched the third-generation Golf, which was European Car of the Year for 1992. Its chassis helped spawn a host of other cars in 1999 within the Volkswagen Group, including the sedan known as the Jetta.

The Volkswagen Group is the first European automaker to produce 100 million vehicles in 1999, and thus writes automotive history. Around the world, 42 plants build some 20,000 vehicles every working day for Europe’s largest automaker. With more than 50 models in its product range, the Group with its nine brands covers almost all vehicle segments on global markets from the small car to the luxury limousine, the family convertible to the high-performance sports car, the small transporter to the midsize delivery van.

Volkswagen revolutionized engine construction in 2001 with the Passat W8. For the first time, eight cylinders are not arranged in two cylinder banks one in front of the other but are configured in a space-saving W formation. Thanks to this powerful engine, the 4-liter Passat sedan with 4MOTION all-wheel drive develops 275 horsepower.

In 2002, the Touran was introduced, it is ideal for families, leisure activities and business and has several attractions: its intelligent space utilization, high-quality appearances, modern engine and both agile and safe chassis with four-link rear suspension and electro-mechanic power-assisted steering.

In 2007 The Touareg V10 TDI was the first turbo-diesel SUV with particulate filter on the US market. 2007 was also the year the Tiguan compact SUV was exhibited at the Geneva Motor Show. Thanks to its variable interior, the compact off-roader based on the Golf has the attributes of an all-rounder and features many technical innovations, including the new 4MOTION four-wheel drive and the electro-mechanical steering system developed.

Currently other Volkswagen models include the three-row Atlas. The number one ranked lowest cost of maintenance among midsize SUVs is the Atlas Cross Sport. The Jetta, ranked number one for lowest cost of maintenance among compact sedans. The mid-size Passat has a lower cost of maintenance than Toyota, Honda and Hyundai midsize sedans. The Golf hatchback is available in regular and performance-oriented GTI form, and the premium Arteon hatchback has the look of a sedan.

Looking ahead, Volkswagen is committed to working towards being carbon neutral across their fleet, production and administration globally by 2050. Their forward-thinking has earned them the winner of the 2021 World Car Awards for the electric compact SUV ID.4 EV. It was voted the 2021 World Car of the Year by a jury of 93 distinguished international journalists from 28 countries.
